I am beyond excited to attend this year's @cyaconference and children's book illustration bootcamp! 🤓

I've been working on my children's book about Mermaids off and on for over a year, and it's time to get some guidance and see this project through! 📖

As a creative my mind is often with the faeries and I get distracted very easily, so focusing on this project during these cold winter months means I can still enjoy Mermaiding ~ just with a mug of tea and my sketchbook hehe 🧜🏽‍♀️💙🐚

This is a "nurdle", or pre production plastic pell

This is a "nurdle", or pre production plastic pellet that makes everything you and I know from laundry hampers to toothbrushes...and yes, even mermaid accessories. 😥

"Plastic pellets escape into the environment during every stage of their lifecycle: from production, to transportation, and during final product manufacturing.

An estimated TEN TRILLION plastic pellets are swept into waterways annually, adding to harmful levels of plastic pollution in the environment.

Pellets are similar in size and shape to fish eggs and are often mistaken by marine animals for food. Plastic pellets can absorb toxins such as dioxins from water and transfer them to the marine food web and potentially to human diets, increasing the risk of adverse effects to wildlife and humans." "Hundreds of thousands of whales and dolphins die every year after being accidentally entangled in fishing gear.

Bycatch was a critical factor in the recent extinction of the Yangtze River dolphin in China, and is the greatest threat to endangered North Atlantic right whales and Arabian Sea humpback whales, as well as the critically endangered vaquita in Mexico, Maui and Hector’s dolphins in New Zealand, Baltic harbour porpoises, and many river dolphin species."

What is Bycatch?

"Bycatch is the incidental capture and mortality of non-target marine animals during fishing...and is one of the biggest threats to marine life worldwide.

Every year 7.3 million tons of marine life are caught incidentally as bycatch in the commercial fishing industry.

The percentage of bycatch far outweighs the amount of target catch."

Manta rays are just one of thousands of species killed every year by becoming hooked or trapped in fishing gear, from coral to seabirds, dolphins to whales - the scale of mortality is so high it threatens the very survival of species and their environments.
